The history of Joint Stock Company “Silur” is rooted in 30s of the XX century. At this time the Ukraine and the Southern USSR began a period of rapid industrial development. This development was powered by the coal mines of the Donets Basin.The coal mines required steel wire rope in huge quantities. In this connection, on the 29th of May, 1939 the Soviet government approved the decision to construct in the Donets Basin the Yuzhny metal product plant to produce steel wire and ropes.

The choice of Khartsyzsk for construction of a new large factory was not accidental.There is a raw material base - metallurgical works of Makeevka, in 16 km, there are convenient access rodes, and the town is in the centre of Donets Basin mining industry where the basic consumers of ropes are located.

On November 11, 1949 the rope shop N1 was put into service with rated capacity of 75.3 thousand tones of ropes per year. The shop is specialized in output of bright and galvanized ropes, twisted and round-strand ropes.

On December 3, 1949 the metal coating and automatic winding shop was put into operation with rated capacity of 29.4 thousand tones per year. The shop is specialized in output of galvanized semi-finished products, galvanized ACSR wire brass-plated for high pressure hoses, spring wire and galvanized rope wire.

On June 6, 1957 the steel wire shop N2 was put into operation with rated capacity of 50 thousand tones of wire per year. The shop is specialized in output of high-strength wire for prestressed concrete constructions, spring and spoke wire, semi-finished products for rope shops. The steel wire shop N2 was the first shop in the USSR to produce high-strength reinforcing wire.

Four main shops and enumerated auxiliary shops and services were put into operation. This concluded construction of the first phase of the plant complex.

The second phase construction was undertaken in the 1960's.

On May 20, 1962 the steel wire shop N4 was put into operation with rated capacity of 79.2 thousand tones of production per year. The shop is specialized in the output of wire for spring concrete, reinforcement ropes, spring wire, semi-finished round and shaped wire.

On June 30, 1966 a new rope shop N2 began working. Its rated capacity is 44 thousand tones of ropes per year. The shop is specialized in the output of bright and galvanized round-strand, shaped-strand and locked coil construction ropes.

On November 16, 1966 the steel wire shop N3 was put into operation with rated capacity of 101.1 thousand tones of wire per year. The shop is specialized in the output of semi-finished product for spring wire to rope shops, cold heading wire and core wire for conductors.

Khartsyzsk steel wire rope plant is the only manufacturer of steel cord in Ukraine. On January 9, 1968 the steel cord shop was put into service with rated capacity of 11.3 thousand tones of steel cord per year. The shop produces brass-plated wire for bead rings of tyres, brass plated carbonic steel wire for production of high pressure hoses, etc.

During its history the plant has been expanded and the equipment, technology and plant management system have been continuously improved.

In 1993, the electric pipe-welding shop was put into operation with rated capacity of 20 thousand tones of products per year (water-gas steel pipes, details of water-gas supply structures and heating systems).

On August 15, 1994 the functioning steel metal products shop was commissioned with a capacity of 3 thousand tones of nails per year.

A year later, on July 19, 1995 the new metal mesh shop with rated capacity of 2 million m2 of mesh per year began to manufacture products.

As a result of changes for the country from a planned economy under the USSR to a market economy it became a necessity to search for new methods of management.

In 1994, a decision over reorganization of Khartsyzsk steel wire rope plant into Joint Stock Company “Silur” was approved.

The development of new technologies and wide connections with foreign partners have allowed us to create some joint ventures of a varying structure.The following are examples of such joint ventures with the factory:

  • “Donbass-Liberty” Ukrainian-Canadian Joint Venture on manufacture of metal furniture;
  • “Silur-Unibros” Ukrainian-Cyprian Joint Venture on manufacture of fasteners;
  • “Silur-Electrode” Ukrainian-British Joint Venture on manufacture of welding electrodes;
  • “Alioto-Silur-Group” Ukrainian-Italian Joint Venture on manufacture of steel rope slings;
  • “Silur-Fibra” Ukrainian-American Joint Venture on manufacture of metal wool for automobile brake blocks.

“Silur Trial” Limited Company (the former consumer goods shop) produces more than 50 items of products. They are: consumer goods and other metal products.

The major contribution to the development of the enterprise was brought by the building company created on the basis of former management by capital construction of the enterprise.

Annually with an active participation of the construction firm more than 40 technical-organizational actions are introduced at the enterprise, modernization and installation of the new equipment, reconstruction of production sectors and other objects of the enterprise is made.

On April 25, 2000 the own turbine shop was put into service with rated capacity of 7.7 MW that allows the enterprise to become independent on instability of Ukrainian energy market. Board of directors with Ivantsov Ivan Ivanovich, Acting General Director at the head, constantly takes the progressive measures directed on assurance of steady raising of manufacture volumes, expansion of assortment and perfection of production quality. The new stage in computerization of the enterprise has created all conditions for conducting of electronic business. The policy of JSC “Silur” from certification of separate kinds of production — to certification of all quality systems of the enterprise in “Ukr SEPRO”, and then — receiving in 2000 of certificate “TUF-NORD” on correspondence of quality system to ISO 9002-94 requirements - a guarantee of high reliability of JSC “Silur” production in the world market. In 2000 JSC “Silur” is recognized by Assembly of business circles of Ukraine as the winner of a national rating “100 enterprises with dynamical development”.
